AV1 Compressed Images - AVIF
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG at the same quality, and supports transparency, HDR and high colour depth, similar to HEIC. The format is open and royalty-free.
AVIF is now mainstream on the web. Safari, Chrome and Firefox all support it, and most major websites serve AVIF images to reduce page load times. macOS supports AVIF natively in Finder, Preview and Photos.
What File Juicer can do with AVIF
Browsers cache AVIF images as part of normal browsing. File Juicer can extract them from the Safari cache and Chrome cache folders, just like JPEG and PNG images.
Sample AVIF image
If you see a photo of the Copenhagen Zoo Tower below, your browser supports AVIF images. This 3 megapixel photo is compressed to just 66 kB.
