USDZ - Apple AR Format

USDZ is Apple's format for augmented reality content, introduced in 2018 with iOS 12 and macOS Mojave. It is used for AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad, and for 3D content on Apple Vision Pro. Retailers, museums and app developers publish USDZ files to let users place 3D objects in their environment using the camera.

What File Juicer can extract from USDZ

A USDZ file is a ZIP archive containing USD scene description files and the texture images used to colour and detail the 3D model. File Juicer can extract those textures as JPEG or PNG images.

This is useful if you want the artwork from a USDZ model without installing a 3D application, or if you want to inspect what textures a model uses.

Where to find USDZ files

  • Apple's AR Quick Look gallery has sample USDZ files for developers
  • Retailer websites using AR product previews often link to USDZ files directly
  • 3D model libraries such as Sketchfab offer USDZ downloads for many models
  • NASA publishes several spacecraft and planetary models as USDZ

Viewing USDZ files on macOS

Finder and Quick Look can preview USDZ files on macOS Mojave and later. Reality Composer (free, available via Xcode or the Mac App Store) can open and edit them.
